Mel Davis

KEER TANCHAK

Text by Keer Tanchak

This is a series of paintings that I worked on with my friend Mel. We shared a studio in Montreal years ago, and have collaborated in playful sessions when we  visit each other. On the island of Gotland we produced a series of comparison cue cards sourced from Swedish magazines. We chose our favorite items from each page: clothes, accessories, men, and then collaged and labeled them side by side. “mel, keer… mel, keer.”
During a recent trip, Mel convinced me to finish some of her paintings at her studio in Berkeley. Her surfaces beckon like stage sets and drops for cinematic closeups. I painted into them: my newest fascination, a contemporary male fashion model’s transfixing face
